We talked to Enes Kutluca, a young entrepreneur who takes his inspiration from nature, about the BioPipe he invented. (Originally published in TARIM.com.tr on April 10, 2016 -- and translated from the original Turkish article)
We met with Enes Kutluca, the inventor of the world's first and only environmentally friendly, sustainable, low-cost wastewater treatment system. Thanks to its work, it is possible to use this system, which provides superior purification without the need for giant facilities, in organic agriculture and drinking water. Hello Mr. Enes, can we get to know you first?
I was born in Ankara in 1988. Since my childhood I have been wondering "how can I solve problems in the simplest way?" I looked for an answer to the question. I started from this question when creating the BioPipe technology. After completing primary and secondary education in Istanbul, I entered Bahçeşehir University - Environmental Engineering department. At the beginning of my university years, I went to America with the $300 I took with me and embarked on a great adventure. I suffered a lot because of this, but I learned how to do business both in America and after I returned to Turkey. I generally have a calm nature. I try to approach all the challenges I encounter in life with simplicity. I think this is how I gained the ability to produce the fastest and easiest solutions.

Could you share with us the story of the system you created, a first in the World?
In this project, which I started with the idea of "Every house should treat its own wastewater", I had to create a product that was both sustainable and very cost-effective, taking into account today's values. It was easy to see that treating wastewater is becoming more and more important in our world, but it was not easy to invent something that was not available in the existing literature. While I was studying in the Department of Environmental Engineering, I shared this idea with my professors. However, I could only convince one of my professors to implement the project. First of all, I would like to point out that the R&D process takes many years. I tried to invent a day and night system, first at my university teacher's house and then in the garage of our own house for about 2 years. Since it is a new technology, BioPipe is improving day by day. BioPipe, the first wastewater treatment system that can be applied even to detached houses in many countries of the world, including Turkey, currently has patents in more than 55 countries and our applications are still ongoing.
What is BioPipe? What are its benefits to nature and the environment and its areas of use?
BioPipe is the world's first wastewater treatment pipe that carries out the entire purification process within pipes. BioPipe, the result of years of research and development activities, is the world's first and only sustainable, environmentally friendly and low-cost wastewater treatment system.
BioPipe, which consists of a small tank connected to the main waste pipe of buildings and bent plastic pipes like radiators connected to this tank, has a very simple appearance from the outside. The secret of the system is the special bacteria in the inner chamber of the pipes. Bacteria living in a special solution purify wastewater organically, without using any chemicals. The purified water is recycled into the building to be used in garden irrigation, car washing or toilet bowls. In this respect we can say that BioPipe is the most unique technology in the world.
As a young entrepreneur, have there been any obstacles in your way while achieving your Goal? Can you tell us how you deal with these?
Of course, many obstacles came my way. First of all, I was looking at BioPipe as 'this is my baby, I won't share it with anyone'. But I realized this was very wrong. We met my partner EnverMısırlı during a weekly event. After the partnership decision, we started looking for a name for the company and decided on BioPipe. At this point, the job of finding investors begins and I think this is the hardest part. We met with dozens of people until we found the right investor. As a result, we received investment from a Swiss angel investor of Turkish origin and founded BioPipe TR ÇevreTeknolojileri A.Ş. in Istanbul and BioPipe Global AG in Zurich in 2013. It is not easy to find a good angel investor nowadays. During the process, some wanted to join the board of directors, and some wanted all important decisions of the company to be approved by them. Maybe the disadvantage of being young in Turkey was that they never trusted the decisions we made. In my opinion, the most important feature that distinguishes a successful angel investor from others is his/her trust in the entrepreneur. My partner and I's goal from day one was to do something global. At this point, we signed a technology licensing and joint venture agreement last January 2016, with short negotiations with Metito, a UAE-based company with 2,500 engineers and operations in many countries such as Asia and Africa, in which Mitsubishi is a major shareholder. In this way, we increased our sales volume and exported BioPipe to the world.
How was the process of getting this system accepted by the world? and how did this process progress in Turkey?
Of course, it is not easy to convince people of a new system. However, I can say that this is also partly related to the structure of the country. For example, in Turkey, people approach everything new with caution. They don't want to buy without seeing or trying. They also do not want to invest in the environmental field. However, for example, in Dubai, I can say that this is the opposite.
What is your next dream and what advice do you have for young entrepreneurs?
BioPipe has a different place among all its competitors as a new technology in the environmental field, where no new system has been born for years. We aim to take this advantage even further and open Bioipipe to the European and American markets, which we have not yet entered. I define entrepreneurship as being able to make others believe in the dream one creates. If you don't believe, you will become a clown and your dream will die. When I say others, I actually mean that you must convince everyone, first of all your partners, your employees, then your investors, your customers, in short, of this dream, step by step, and continue on your way. This process is a difficult process for some. We must think of the difficulties we encounter as red lights on the road and continue on our way. So my biggest advice would be to not give up on your dreams and continue on your way.
Since the date this article was written BioPipe and Metito installed over 30 STPs in various water stressed Countries around the world, but mostly in the Middle East. BioPipe and Metito’s partnership expired during 2019 at which time LifeQuest World Corp purchased all the IP and Patents of BioPipe from BioPipe Global AG and Enes Kutluca took the position of COO and Director of LifeQuest World Corp.
